As we grow older, maintaining balance and stability becomes essential to staying independent and confident at home. Falls can happen to anyone — but with the right steps, many can be prevented.
At Enerst Care, we’re passionate about helping people live safely, comfortably, and without fear of falling. Here are our top tips to reduce risks and stay steady on your feet.
1. Keep Moving
Regular movement keeps your muscles strong and your joints flexible. Gentle exercises like walking, tai chi, or light stretching improve balance and coordination. Even a few minutes a day can make a big difference.
2. Make Your Home Safer
Small changes at home can prevent big accidents.
Remove loose rugs or clutter from walkways.
Ensure rooms and hallways are well lit.
Install grab rails near stairs, bathrooms, and doorways.
Keep frequently used items within easy reach to avoid overreaching or climbing.
Our carers at Enerst Care can also help identify and reduce fall risks during home visits.
3. Wear the Right Footwear
Choose shoes that fit well, have good grip, and offer ankle support. Avoid slippers or socks on smooth floors — they can be surprisingly slippery. Comfortable, supportive footwear helps you stay steady throughout the day.
4. Review Your Medications
Some medicines can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or affect balance. It’s important to review your prescriptions regularly with your GP or pharmacist. Understanding side effects helps you stay aware and prevent accidents.
5. Check Your Eyes and Hearing
Good vision and hearing are essential for balance. Schedule regular eye and ear tests to ensure you can spot hazards early and hear warning sounds clearly. Even small adjustments to glasses or hearing aids can make your environment safer.
6. Stay Hydrated and Eat Well
Dehydration can cause low blood pressure and dizziness, while poor nutrition can weaken muscles and bones. Drink plenty of fluids and eat balanced meals to maintain energy and strength.
7. Use Support if You Need It
There’s no shame in using a walking stick, frame, or grab bar — these tools exist to help you stay mobile and independent. Our carers are trained to help clients use these aids safely and confidently.
8. Listen to Your Body
If you ever feel unsteady, dizzy, or weak, slow down and rest. It’s better to pause for a moment than risk a fall. Make sure your loved ones or carers are aware so they can offer extra support if needed.
