Protecting Yourself from Scams

ree

Unfortunately, scams targeting older or vulnerable people are becoming more common — from fake phone calls and emails to doorstep and online fraud. These scams can be upsetting and financially damaging, but with awareness and confidence, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from falling victim.

At Enerst Care, your safety and peace of mind are our priority. Here’s how to recognise the warning signs of scams and what you can do to stay protected.

1. Be Cautious with Unfamiliar Calls and Messages

Scammers often pretend to be from trusted organisations — like your bank, a delivery service, or even the NHS.If you receive a call, text, or email asking for personal or financial details:

  • Never share bank information, passwords, or PIN numbers.

  • Don’t rush — legitimate organisations will never pressure you to act immediately.

  • Hang up and contact the organisation directly using an official phone number.

If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

2. Watch Out for Doorstep Scams

Some fraudsters knock on doors pretending to be utility workers, charity collectors, or repair technicians.Stay safe by:

  • Asking to see official identification.

  • Calling the company directly to verify the visitor before letting them in.

  • Never paying cash on the doorstep.

If you feel uncomfortable, close the door and call a trusted family member or the police (101) for advice.

Our Enerst Care carers are trained to recognise suspicious activity and will always report concerns promptly.

3. Stay Alert Online

Online scams are increasingly sophisticated. Be extra careful when using email or social media:

  • Don’t click on links or download attachments from unknown senders.

  • Use strong passwords and update them regularly.

  • Check website addresses — official sites usually start with https:// and display a padlock icon.

  • Avoid sharing too much personal information on social media.

If you’re ever unsure about an email or message, show it to a trusted person before responding.

4. Be Aware of Banking and Investment Scams

Some scams promise quick money, refunds, or “special investment opportunities.”

  • Ignore offers that sound too good to be true — they usually are.

  • Speak to your bank if you suspect a scam or have already shared information. Most banks have dedicated fraud teams ready to help and protect your account.

5. Keep Important Documents Safe

Store important paperwork — like passports, bank statements, and utility bills — in a secure place.Avoid leaving them in plain sight or giving copies to anyone you don’t know well.Shred unwanted documents that include personal information.

6. Talk About It

Scammers rely on silence and embarrassment to succeed. If you’ve been targeted or think you might have fallen for a scam, don’t be afraid to speak up.Tell someone you trust — a family member, friend, or your Enerst Care carer — and report it to:

The sooner you report it, the more likely it is you’ll prevent further harm.

7. Stay Informed

Scammers are always coming up with new tricks. Keep up to date by:

  • Signing up for scam alerts from your local council or bank.

  • Visiting trusted websites like Age UK or Which? for safety advice.

  • Talking to your carer or family about anything suspicious.

At Enerst Care, we regularly share guidance with our clients to help them stay aware and confident when handling calls, emails, and visits.
