A fall can be a frightening experience — but knowing what to do next can make all the difference. Staying calm, assessing the situation, and getting the right help ensures safety and recovery.
At Enerst Care, we understand that falls can shake your confidence. Our carers are trained to respond safely, provide reassurance, and help prevent future incidents. Here’s what to do if a fall happens to you or a loved one.
1. Stay Calm and Take a Moment
The first step is to stay as calm as possible. Don’t rush to get up straight away — take a few deep breaths and try to assess how you feel. Moving too quickly could cause further injury.
2. Check for Pain or Injury
Before trying to stand, slowly move your hands and feet to check for pain, swelling, or bleeding. If you experience sharp pain, dizziness, or think you may have broken something, stay where you are and call for help instead of forcing movement.
If you have a personal alarm or phone nearby, use it to contact family, a neighbour, or emergency services (dial 999 if necessary).
3. If You Can Get Up Safely
If you feel strong enough and uninjured, follow these steps to get up carefully:
Roll onto your side.
Use your arms to push up and get onto your hands and knees.
Crawl or move to a sturdy piece of furniture, like a chair.
Place your hands on the chair and slowly bring one leg up to kneel.
Push yourself up, one hand at a time, and turn to sit down.
Take your time — there’s no need to rush. Once seated, rest before trying to move further.
4. If You Can’t Get Up
If you can’t get up, don’t panic.
Try to get comfortable — use a cushion, folded blanket, or rolled-up clothing for support.
Keep warm by covering yourself with a coat or throw if nearby.
Move gently to avoid stiffness while you wait for help.
If possible, call for assistance or use a personal alarm system.
If no one is around, try to make noise or knock on a wall or floor to attract attention.
5. After the Fall
Once you’re safe and comfortable, it’s important to let someone know what happened — even if you feel fine.Your GP may want to check for underlying causes such as balance issues, low blood pressure, or side effects from medication. Identifying the reason helps prevent future falls.
6. Take Time to Recover
It’s normal to feel shaken or anxious after a fall. Rest, hydrate, and gradually return to your usual activities when ready. At Enerst Care, our carers can assist during recovery — helping with mobility, daily tasks, and building confidence step by step.
7. Review Home Safety
After any fall, take a moment to reassess your environment:
Remove trip hazards or clutter.
Improve lighting in hallways and bathrooms.
Add grab rails where needed.
Check that footwear and walking aids are in good condition.
Our team can help conduct home safety reviews to reduce future risks.
